What is an e-mark, and what is an E-mark?
Unlike other product groups in the EU, the CE marking is not applied to automotive components and entire vehicles. Instead, there is the so-called "e-mark". Unlike the CE marking, there is no possibility of self-declaration for the e-mark. The basis for the e-mark is the "Commission Directive 2004/104/EC of 14 October 2004", which regulates questions of EMC testing and certification of motor vehicles and vehicle components.
The E-mark, with an upper-case E, on the other hand, has its basis in the ECE regulations of the United Nations, specifically in Regulation No. 10, which deals with the approval of vehicles with regard to their electromagnetic compatibility. Consequently, the ECE mark is a type-approval mark. ECE stands for Economic Commission for Europe, a regional commission under the jurisdiction of the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
In order for a product to be awarded the E- or e-mark, the tests carried out must be certified by an independent organisation. You also have to create a test plan and submit it to a certified body, which is difficult for many companies.
